Dhaka, Apr 28 – BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday alleged that religious minorities, including Buddhists, are being subjected to repression under the rule of current government.“Religious minority people are being repressed and attacked repeatedly under the rule of the present government. No one now has any right to speak up,” he said.
The BNP leader came up with the comment at a reception programme arranged by BNP at its chairperson’s Gulshan office on the occasion of Buddha Purnima.
He urged the people of all walks of life and religions to get united to ‘restore’ democracy and people’s rights.
Senior BNP leaders, led by Fakhrul, exchanged greetings with the Buddhist community members at the programme, marking the Buddha Purnima to be celebrated on Sunday.
Buddhists from different parts of the country joined the programme.
BNP standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman, BNP chairperson’s adviser Sukomal Barua and party religious affairs secretary Diepn Dewan were, among others, present.
Buddha Purnima is a festival that marks Gautam Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death. Lord Buddha was born on a full moon day in May, 563 BC. – UNB
