BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah on Thursday urged former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque to stay aside from the Law Commission as its chairman. The BNP leader made the demand at a press briefing at the Supreme Court Bar Association building.
The BNP leader alleged that the government made him the Law Commission chairman so that he backs the government in bringing amendments to the electoral laws.
Rafiq said Khairul Haque had given a verdict debarring any judge of the apex court from taking the office of profit within two years of retirement.
“Just because of the verdict the government did not appoint anyone else to the post of the Law Commission chairman.”
On July 23, the government appointed Khairul Haque chairman of the Law Commission for the next three years.
The post fell vacant after its last chairman justice MA Rashid, a retired High Court judge, resigned on October 7, 2010.
Justice Khairul was made the country’s 19th chief justice on September 30, 2010. He went on retirement on May 17, 2011.
During his career, he led the Appellate Division in declaring the caretaker government system illegal and unconstitutional. – UNB
