Dhaka, Nov 28 – A total of 61 leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, a major partner in the BNP-led 20-party alliance on Wednesday submitted nomination papers to contest the forthcoming general elections, according to party sources.A senior Jamaat leader preferring anonymity said the BNP gave green signal to Jamaat to provide 25 seats but 61 party leaders submitted the nomination papers as they have demands for more seats. They mighty contest as independent candidates.
He said Jamaat ameer Maulana Makbul Ahmed will not contest the elections due to his illness.
Jamaat secretary general Dr Shafiqur Rahman submitted nomination paper to contest the polls form Dhaka-15 and its nayebe ameers- Maulana Abdus Sobhan from Pabna-2 and Prof Mujibur Rahman from
Chapainawabganj-1.
Besides, Masud Sayeedi, son of war crime convict Maulana Delwar Hossain Sayeedi submitted nomination paper to contest the December 30 polls from Pirojpur-1, while party’s assistant secretary general Syed Abdullah Mohammed Taher from Cumilla-4, Hamidur Rahman Azad from Cox’s Bazar-2, Maulana Abdul Khaleque from Panchagarh-1, Maulana Ataur Rahman from Rajshahi-1, Prof Golam Porwar from Khulna-3, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad from Khulna-2 and Barrister Mominul, son of Motiur Rahman Nizami, who was executed for war crimes, from Pabna-1 constituencies.
Another senior leader said the Jamaat candidates would take part in the election with neither BNP’s poll symbol, the sheaf of paddy as the party lost both of its registration and party symbol the scale by the
