Amid a threat from an anonymous letter writer, the Egyptian embassy in Dhaka on Tuesday announced to keep its Consular section closed for 11 days from Wednesday. Contacted, office-in-charge of Gulshan thana Rafiqul Islam said, “A person identifying himself as M Shawkat Osman from Firmgate dropped a handwritten letter into the letter box of the embassy on Tuesday.” Quoting the text of the letter, the OC said, “Stop genocide on Brotherhood…don’t make Egypt like Syria…something wrong may happen like Egyptian embassy firing in Libya.” The letter writer also identified himself as a supporter of Morssi, the OC said adding that security measures had earlier been tightened at the city’s Egypt mission soon after the military crackdown in Cairo. “Being informed about the threat, we’ve strengthened our surveillance at the diplomatic enclave (Gulshan-Baridhara) to avert any untoward incident,” Islam said. Meanwhile, the Egypt mission in Dhaka sent a message to the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) for distribution to media outlets on Tuesday that reads, “The Consular section of the embassy will remain closed from August 21 to 31 due to some security seasons.” The message, however, did not elaborate the security concern. – UNB
