BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said the ruling party is still rigid on its stance to hold the next election under its own arrangement fearing that it will skid off miles away from power. “The Prime Minister has said she won’t move even by a hair’s breadth from holding the election as per the current constitution. She said it as she knows they’ll go miles away from power if moves away from the constitution,” he told a discussion. The BNP spokesman also urged the government to take lessons from history that no one can stay in office against people’s will. Barrister Abdus Salam Talukder Smrity Parisad organised the programme at the Jatiya Press Club marking the 14th death anniversary of the ex-BNP secretary general. Fakhrul said the government is pushing the country towards a dark tunnel to fulfill its wild desire to cling to power. He alleged the government has brought the 15th amendment to the constitution with a motive to hang onto power. “But no one can stay in power without people’s support and confidence.” The BNP leader urged the government to arrange the next election in due time under a non-party caretaker government. Or else, he warned that “People have awoken and they’ll dash your dream to cling to power by a vigorous movement.” Fakhrul recalled the role of Salam Talukder in making BNP a stronger party foiling all conspiracies against it. “A farsighted politician like Salam Talukder took the party forward together with Khaleda Zia thwarting all conspiracies to destroy BNP.” BNP standing committee member Jamiruddin Sircar, MK Anwar, Nazrul Islam Khan and vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman, among others, addressed the programme with former vice chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Emajuddin Ahmed in the chair. – UNB
