HC asks police to produce Jamuna Bank director

Dhaka, Jan 29 – The High Court (HC) on Tuesday ordered police to produce Jamuna Bank Managing Director Shafiqul Alam before it on February 12, if he would not appear before the court willingly in accordance with its order.
The HC bench comprising Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice Ashish Ranjan Das passed the order as Alam did not appear before the bench yesterday in accordance with its order.
The HC bench ordered the officer-in-charge of Motijheel police station to arrest Jamuna Bank Managing Director Shafiqul Alam in order to produce him before it, if he fails to do so in accordance with the HC order.
Earlier on January 22, the same bench of the HC summoned Alam to appear before it on January 29 to explain why the bank did not pay the Fixed Deposit Receipt (FDR) money to a businessman.
But, Alam did not appear before it and submitted an application through Advocate Habibul Islam Bhuiyan seeking time. In his application Alam said that he is now abroad. Hence, he could not appear before the court yesterday.
However, petitioner lawyer Barrister Altaf Hossain opposed the time petition saying that Alam did not include his visa and ticket with the application. So, he might not go abroad and skipped the court appearance intentionally.
Then, the HC bench came up with the order. According to the writ petition, a businessman, Taleb-un-Nur, opened an FDR account of Tk 51 lakh with the bank’s Nawabpur branch on March 5, 2005. The deposit became matured after five years. But, the account was showing a total of Tk 2.5 lakh as balance.
Later, Talebun gave power of attorney to his business partner Hasanul Mujib to withdraw the money from the bank, but the authority did not pay him the money stating that the account contained an insufficient amount.
Following it, Talebur wrote to the Bangladesh Bank failing to get a response for the concerned bank despite repeated attempts but failed.
Later, Hasanul filed a writ petition with the HC on February 12, 2017. Later, the HC directed Jamuna Bank to pay Hasanul Tk 51 lakh against his FDR within 30 days. But, the Bank authority did not pay it. Hence, Hasanul filed the petition with the HC seeking its directive over the matter. – Staff Reporter
