Miscreants set fire to a Hindu temple after vandalising it, presumably as a sequel to a
dispute between two local groups of the Hindu community over the ownership of its land,
at Madarganj village in Sadar upazila on Wednesday night.
Locals said a gang of miscreants swooped on the century-old Rashik Roy Jeo Temple at
the village on Wednesday night and vandalised the valuables inside it.
Later the attackers left the scene after setting it on fire, burning down six idols of gods
and goddesses, several religious books and other valuables.
Being informed, a firefighting unit rushed in and put out the blaze.
Mohammad Jafarullah, chairman of the local union parishad, said there had been a
longstanding dispute between two groups of the local Hindu community over the
ownership of the temple land.
Any of the groups might have carried out the attack, he added.
Phulbabu, a van puller of the village, was killed in an attack over the same issue on
September 19, 2009.
A case was filed against 62 people with Thakurgaon Police Station in this connection.
Connected, Firoz Khan, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said as the matter is
a complex one, legal actions will be taken against those involved after receiving written
