DHAKA – Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury on Wednesday said the forthcoming general election is going to be held before the completion of tenure of Ninth Parliament, first of its kind in the country.The Speaker said this during a meeting with a six-member European Union (EU) delegation led by EU Ambassador William Hanna at Parliament Bhaban.
The election-time, pre-election 90 days, deployment of foreign election observers and role of Election Commission came up in the discussion between the Speaker and the EU delegation.
Talking to reporters, The Speaker said the EU delegation wanted to know the election-time and when the election would be held. The EU delegation also discussed about the time limit of sending election observers.
The delegation also wanted to know the importance of October 25 and January 24 since the two dates are being discussed at political levels.
The Speaker said as the EU delegation wanted to know as to how the election observers would work she suggested them to utilise their experience of 2008 general elections.
She expressed her hope that the next election would be held in a festive mood with participation of all political parties.
EU Ambassador didn’t agree to speak on their meeting with the Speaker. A press release issued by Parliament Secretariat on Wednesday said the EU delegation discussed different aspects of process to monitor the general election.
The Speaker told the EU delegation that the EC plays the vital role to conduct the polls and the government responsibility is to provide assistance to the commission.
