Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith on Saturday said that he wanted contest the
next general elections again for Sylhet 1 parliamentary constituency from the ruling
Awami League-led alliance.
He made the announcement while replying to press queries after inaugurating the
renovation work of Kabi Nazrul Auditorium at Rikabibazar in Sylhet city.
‘I am trying to implement the main development works within the tenure of the present
government,’ the finance minister said, adding that he wanted to contest the next election
for Sylhet 1 constituency — Sylhet city area.
Earlier, at around 2:30pm, Muhith also inaugurated the expansion of Central Shaheed
Minar at Chowhatta in the city.
Muhith said that none of the governments in past had taken any effort to renovate and
expand the Central Shaheed Minar after its establishment in 1988.
‘Rather,’ he added, ‘the BNP-Jamaat alliance had tried to destroy it by launching attack
on the Shaheed Minar,’
He said that the incumbent government took step to make the Shaeed Minar attractive
and expanded.
Muhith also asked the newly elected Sylhet city mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury,
who was present at the programme, for ending the Shaheed Minar expansion work by
December 16.
Acting city mayor Mohammed Shahjahan, former mayor Badar Uddin Ahmad
Kamran, District Council Administrator Abduz Zahir Chowdhury and district Awami
League General Secretary Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, among others, attended the
