New government by middle of January: Ashraf

The ruling Awami League has asked all political parties to prepare for elections. On Sunday, as the Opposition started another long strike for 84 hours  to push for a return to the caretaker, a top Awami League leader gave clear indications they had other ideas. As he inaugurated the selling of nomination forms to Awami League MP aspirants, AL General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam said in clear terms that a new government will be in the office by mid-January.
The Awami League commenced its electoral preparations by starting to sell the nomination forms which aspirants need to submit for being considered for a party ticket for the parliament poll.
The process kick-started with a nomination paper collected for party chief Sheikh Hasina for Gopalganj-3.
The party’s general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam and advisory council member Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed collected the nomination form.
“I request all the political parties to participate in the poll for the sake of democracy,” Syed Ashraful Islam said during the event. “It will not be any good for democracy if voters are obstructed from casting their votes.”
He said that the country will get a new government by mid-January and that the people want a transition through ballot.
Nomination forms could be collected and submitted until Nov 16 by any Awami Awami Leaguer seeking to contest the parliament polls, Islam said.
He indicated the deadline might be extended, if needed. Aspirants thronged the Awami League headquarters at Bangabandhu Avenue since Sunday morning to collect the nomination forms.
Price of each form has been fixed at Tk 25,000. -bdnews24
