The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka placed five BNP leaders including Standing Committee members MK Anwar MP and Barrister Moudud Ahmed MP on eight days’ remand in two separate cases.
Magistrate Rezaul Karim of the CMM Court rejected their bail petitions and allowed police five days in one case and three days in the other case.The other leaders are BNP Standing Committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia, BNP Chairperson’s Advisor Abdul Awal Mintu and her Special Assistant Advocate Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas.
The top leaders were produced to the court at about 10.30 am. Police arrested them after the opposition declared the third long shutdown which begun on last Sunday. In the wee hours of Saturday, police arrested Shimul Biswas.
They were shown arrested in two cases, one on charge of attack on police and bomb explosions in Kamalapur during Nov 5 shutdown and the other case was filed for vandalism in front of Motijheel Ideal School
and College on Sept 24.
The top BNP leaders were earlier produced to the court on Saturday
with 20 days’ remand plea, 10 days in each case. However, Magistrate
Joynab Begum could not take decision about the bail petitions of the
accused and the remand prayers of the prosecution as the Detective
Branch of Police failed to submit the case docket (CD).
Senior pro-BNP lawyers including Joynal Abedin, Sanaullah Miah and
Masud Ahmed Talukder moved the cases on behalf of the defence while
Public Prosecutors, Advocates Abdullah Abu and Khandaker Abdul Mannan
supported the remand pleas on behalf of the prosecution.
In another case Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court on
Thursday placed former President of Jatyatabadi Chhatra Dal Sultan
Salauddin Tuku on 20 days’ remand to quiz him in five different cases.
Magistrate Hasibul Haque of the CMM Court passed the order after the
Investigation Officer (IO) produced Tuku to the court seeking 54 days’
remand in four cases filed with Ramna Police Station and two cases of
Shahbagh Police Station.
After hearing the court granted four days’ remand each in five cases.
Of the five cases four were filed with Ramna Police Station and the
remaining case was filed with Shahbagh Police Station on charges of
planning to obstruct police while they were performing their duties
and creating panic in public minds through cocktail explosion.
On October 21, law enforcers arrested Tuku from a patrol car of BNP
Chairperson’s Security Force in front of PNP’s central office at
Nayapaltan in the capital. – Court Correspondent
