The BNP said the remand of its five leaders was ‘vindictive’ and demanded
their immediate release.
“The government has used the court to send our five top leaders into police
remand,” said Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi in an emergency
press briefing on Thursday.“This is just an exhibition of the government’s vindictive and dirty game,”
he said.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrates Court sent BNP Standing Committee Members
Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar, Rafiqul Islam Miah as well as the BNP chairperson’s
advisor Abdul Awal Mintoo and her personal assistant Shimul Biswas to
eight-day police remand for cases filed over attacks, vandalism and
explosions.
Rizvi held a press conference after they were sent to police custody.
He demanded that their remand orders be immediately withdrawn saying, “One
day we will adequately reply to the horrendous way the government is
suppressing the Opposition.”
He claimed the government has been trying to disrupt the Opposition’s
campaign for election under non-party government.
The BNP Joint Secretary General also blamed government ‘agents’ for the
vandalism, arson and casualties during the 18-Party Alliance’ strike.
“The houses of influential persons, Opposition leaders and vital places in
the capital were recently attacked. We believe the government endorsed
administration and detective agencies are behind these. They are working as
