BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday called upon the leaders and activists of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student organisation of the opposition BNP, to take strong position in the streets to force the government to quit.“Setting fire on one or two motor vehicles is not enough to intensify the movement. You have to force the government to quit by taking strong strength in the streets,” he said while addressing a discussion meeting at the National Press Club.
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal organised the meeting to mark the 49th birthday of BNP Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman. JCD vice president Bajlul Karim Chowdhury presided over the meeting.
The BNP leader said the 18-party opposition alliance would not take part in the election unless the changes take place in the face of government.
The government in one hand has created an election festivity and on the other had it has been conducting drive to arrest the opposition leaders, he mentioned.
Fakhrul said the government cannot hold a free, fair and acceptable election by hoodwinking the people.
He said the present government neither an all-party government nor and election-time government, rather it is a restructuring shape of the grand alliance.
Terming the present government as dangerous monstrous autocratic government, the BNP leader said the prime minister has been snatching the all democratic rights of the people.
He however cautioned that the present government led by Sheikh Hasina cannot cling to power in the name to constitution.
Fakhrul said the ruling party leaders do not go to their constituencies fearing public wrath.
He, along with senior party leaders, cut the cake of birthday of Tarique Rahman following the discussion.
Dhaka University teacher Dr AFM Yusuf Haider, BNP leader ABM Mosharraf, Mohila Dal leader Shirin Sultana, president of the National Press Club Kamal Uddin Sabuj among others addressed the function. – Staff Reporter
