BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Saturday alleged that the government is destroying the spirit of the Liberation War and democracy with its ongoing efforts to hold a unilateral Election. “The government is annihilating the spirit of independence and democracy with its process of holding unilateral polls,” he said. The BNP leader said the ruling party is moving ahead with its plan for the lopsided election ignoring public sentiment only because of its obstinacy. Mosharraf came up with the remarks after paying homage to martyred intellectuals at the Martyred Intellectuals Mausoleum at Mirpur in the city on the occasion of Martyred Intellectuals Day. Terming the incident of 128 candidates being elected unopposed a nasty matter, he said, “In the polls, Awami League will be declared elected as there is no other contestants. It’s a nasty example in Bangladesh’s political history.” In reply to a query why their party is silent over the execution of Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah, Mosharraf said, “I can’t comment over it.” – UNB
