A local leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was shot to death by unidentified miscreants in Battala Bazar area of the district town on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Rafiqul Islam Faruk, 48, vice-president of Sadar upazila unit BNP, and also chairman of Dainya Union Parishad.Police said a group of miscreants opened fire on Faruk at a place near the Battala Bazar while he was going to the local market from his residence at about 6:45 am, leaving him dead on the spot.
Police recovered the body and sent it to sadar hospital morgue for autopsy. However, no one was arrested in this connection.
Police said the BNP leader might have been killed over establishing supremacy in the area.
Mentionable, Faruk, a three-time elected chairman of the union parishad, had been living at a rented house in Akurtakur area of the town for security reasons.
Local BNP called an eight-hour hartal in Sadar upazila for Saturday protesting the killing.
As the news of Faruk’s death spread around, his supporters ran amok and beat up local Awami League leader Tara Miah and vandalised several shops belonging to the ruling party men at the bazaar.- UNB
