South Sudan officially known as the Republic of South Sudan is a land-locked country in middle Africa. South Sudan is bordered by the Republic of Sudan to the north, Kenya to the Southeast, Uganda to the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the southwest, the Central African Republic to the west, and Ethiopia to the east. The capital city of South Sudan is Juba. It is also the largest city.The area of South Sudan is 619,745 square km and population about eight million. Compared to Bangladesh, South Sudan is almost four times larger in area but we have about 20 times the population it has. And density of population in South Sudan is only 13.33 per kilometre. But Bangladesh has more than a thousand people in every square km. GDP (PPP) is $1,006.
The official language in South Sudan is English. Primary at all levels are in English. But language of instruction is Arabian. And the people primarily speak Chadian.
The current education system in The Republic of South Sudan includes 8 years of primary education, 4 years of secondary education and 4 years of University education. In 2007 South Sudan adopted English as the official language. But there is a severe shortage of English teachers and English speaking teachers.
In South Sudan 60.5pc of population are Christians, 32.9pc follow the traditional African religion and 6.2pc are Muslims.
South Sudan is covered in tropical forest, swamps, and grassland. The White Nile passes through the country. The climate of South Sudan is equatorial or tropical. The rainy season has high humidity and large amounts of rainfall is followed by the drier season. The average cool temperature is between 20-30o C and the warm temperature ranges from 23-37o C. The most rainfall is seen between May to October. But the rainy season may start from the April and extend to November. On average May is the wettest season.
South Sudan mainly exports timber to the international market. The natural resources in South Sudan are petroleum, iron ore, copper, chromium ore, zinc, tungsten, mica, silver, gold, diamonds, hardwoods, limestone and hydropower. The country is mainly dependent on agriculture.
Many artist of South Sudan sing in English, Kiswahili and Arabi Juba etc. The famous sports in South Sudan are wresting and mock battles. Football is also becoming famous. Juba air port has regular international communication.
South Sudan became an independent state on 9 July 2011, following a referendum that passed with 98.83pc of the vote. It is a United Nations member state, a member state of the African Union, and a member state of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development. In July 2012, South Sudan signed the Geneva Conventions. South Sudan has experienced internal conflict since its independence.
Although the White Nile runs through the country, water is scarce during the dry season in areas that are not located on the river; about half the population does not have access to an improved water source.
