Hundreds of poor people in 14 char unions of Narsingdi district attained self- reliance economically and changed their life style through various income generating activities by their own initiatives.
The char people also received cordial cooperation from the government as well as non-government organisations for their self- sufficiency.
As the people are becoming self- reliant economically, awareness is also being developed among all in those areas on sanitation, safe drinking water, health care facilities for children and mothers, dowry free and child marriage, repression on women and ensuring education of their children. BSS correspondent recently visited different char villages of the district and found that the under privileged char dwellers who were extremely poor 10 years ago, are now leading somewhat a solvent life. They have already attained self reliance through farming of early variety vegetables, cultivation of sweet potato and ground nut, setting up cottage and small industries, rearing of cows, goat and poultry birds, homestead gardening and fish farming in rivers.
Talking to BSS, Abdul Hoque of village char Aralia, Abdur Rahim of char Digoldee, Hanif Miah of Alokbali and Samad Miah of Nazarpur village narrated their successful story.
They said before five years, they were extremely poor. Now they are leading better life. They are now ensuring education to their children, bringing the families under complete sanitation coverage, getting health care facilities and adopting proper family planning reducing high population growth. Besides, they are also now getting all digital facilities.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Johirul Islam said the char people have also achieved huge benefits from government’s social safety net and poverty alleviation programme and get job opportunities during the lean period. –BSS, Narsingdi
