Attorney General Mahbubey Alam on Wednesday accused SCBA president AJ Mohammad Ali of breaching the ‘mutual understanding reached’ on Tuesday in presence of the Chief Justice not to hold any meeting, procession or rally on the Supreme Court premises. Addressing a press conference after witnessing the BNP-Jamaat loyalist lawyers’ meeting and rally on the SC premises, Mahbubey Alam termed Mohammad Ali’s posture volte-face and remarked that it might be the result of pressure from Jamaat-e-Islami or BNP hardliners. Referring to his past tenure as president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), the chief government law officer said, ”During my tenure there was an HC ruling banning on meeting/rally on the SC premises and we complied with it, and used to hold lawyers’ meeting or rally crossing the Majar gate outside the SC enclosure. After calling the senior lawyers from both the rival parties before him, Chief Justice M Muzammel Hossain on Tuesday voiced his ‘grave concern and anger’ following the uneasy calm over the happenings on the Supreme Court precincts for the last two days over the BNP-led opposition’s political programme, ‘March for Democracy’. The lawyer leaders reportedly agreed unanimously on holding professional meeting, discussion or rally inside the SCBA building or outside the SC fencing crossing the Majar gate, but the following day the consensus ‘did not work’. Meanwhile, SCBA president Mohammad Ali, also adviser to the BNP chairperson, at another press conference denied the report on consensus reached over the lawyers meeting and rally. – UNB
