3 killed as victor, vanquished supporters’ clash in Dohar, Dhaka

Three persons have died on Monday in a clash between supporters of the victor and the vanquished candidates of Dhaka-1 constituency at Bilashpur in Dohar Upazila. According to the local people and police, supporters of Bilashpur Union Parishad (UP) chairman Md Alauddin and Dohar unit Swechchhasebok League leader Bashar Chakdar clashed with sharp weapons around 9am at Hazarbagh village.Dhaka’s Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shahidul Islam told bdnews24.com several people were attacked with sharp weapons and beaten up.
Three were killed on the spot. They are Morshed, 50, his son Masud, 30, and Makbul, 36, nephew of UP chairman Alauddin.
Eight of the injured were hospitalised. Police had initially said two of the injured had died but later retracted.
Dhaka’s ASP Shyamol Kumar Mukherjee said: “Relatives of Aslam Molla, 50, and ‘Rejaul’, 50, had thought they had died on their way to hospital and had informed us accordingly.”
He said the police later confirmed that the two were being treated at the Mitfold Hospital.
Apart from them, Anwar Khandker, 50, and Shahjalal Khandker, 54, are being treated at the Mitford, while Basirun Nesa, 55, her son ‘Sumon’, 14, Shah-e-Alam, 35, and ‘Saleha’, 50, have been admitted to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
ASP Shahidul Islam said four persons had been arrested.
According to local residents, though Alauddin is a leader of local Awami League, he campaigned for the JP (Ershad) presidium member Salma Islam in the polls while Chakdar is known to be loyal to former minister and AL leader Abdul Mannan Khan.
The JP candidate defeated Khan by a margin of more than 4,500 votes. The clash broke out in the morning following heated exchanges between the two factions.
ASP Mukharjee, however, said that, though polls provided the immediate trigger for Monday’s clash, the two factions were involved in turf battles for area domination.
Relatives of Anwar, injured in the skirmish, said they had been attacked as they joined the Jatiya Party after leaving the Awami League.
All of those killed were UP chairman Alauddin’s men, said the police officer.
Additional police forces have been deployed in the area and the situation was now under control, he added. – bdnews24.com
