Ashraf sceptical about reason behind Salma’s suicide

Awami League general secretary and LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam on Saturday urged the government to unearth the reason behind Rana Plaza survivor Salma’s reported suicide.
“It’s not correct that financial crisis and lack of treatment compelled Salma to commit suicide as reported in newspapers…the fact needs to be unearthed,” said Syed Ashraf in a statement over the print media reports describing those as ‘incorrect’ and ‘unfounded’.
Salma, 27, a female garment worker who was rescued from the debris of the Rana Plaza several days after its collapse in Savar last year hanged herself at her rented house at Bamnartek under Turag Police Station on Friday morning.
Refuting the newspaper reports, the AL general secretary said Salma received Tk 1, 20,000 as help from the government and other agencies.
“Enough money was given by the Prime Minster and various organizations so that she can lead a normal life apart from her treatment.”
Ashraf, also the LGRD Minister said, “It’s not clear why Salma suddenly moved to a new house from Savar to Turag this month.”
Rana Plaza, an eight-storey building in Savar on the outskirts of the capital came down crashing on April 24 last year, killing 1,132 people and injuring over 2,000 others.
