Political violence ‘begets fraudulence’

Political violence and agitations over the last few months have facilitated a large-scale of financial frauds and subdued economic activities in the country, observed a CPD report published on Saturday. The report, titled ‘Analytical Review on Bangladesh’s Macro-economic Performance in FY2013-14’, noted that the share of non-performing loans in the total outstanding loans in September this fiscal stood at 12.8 percent, which is the highest since the fiscal 2008-2009. The NPL has ‘attributed to large-scale financial frauds and subdued economic activity to political violence and agitation’, said the report. The CPD report also pinned down the factor that there was a failure to practice due diligence to undertake proper investigation in this connection. – UNB
