An alleged carjacker was killed and his associate injured in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Chaltetala in the district town early Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Ekramul Babu, 40, son of Khaibar Sardar of Sultanpur in the town while the injured was Shahidul Islam, 30, son of Abul Hossain of Madhumollardangir in the town.Police said some muggers had snatched a private car belonging to the wife of one army officer, Lt Col Omar Faruqe, from Mohammadpur area in the capital on Tuesday afternoon.Being tipped off that the car was taken to Satkhira, a patrol team of police launched a drive at Chaltetala intersection around 5:30am where they halted a private car and challenged its riders Babu and Shahidul.At one stage, the muggers fired gunshots at police prompting the law enforcers to fire back, triggering a gunfight that left Babu and Shahidul injured.Critically injured, they were rushed to Satkhira Sadar Hospital where doctors declared Babu dead.Shahidul is undergoing treatment at the hospital under police custody. Officer-in-charge of Satkhira Sadar Police Station Enamul Haque confirming the incident said army officer Lt. Col.
