Elder brother testifies in JU student Zubair murder case

A Dhaka court on Tuesday recorded the depositions of an elder brother of slain Jahangirnagar University student Zubair Ahmed in the case filed in connection with the murder.
Abdullah Al Mamun brother of the victim testified before the Fourth Speedy Trial Tribunal’s Judge, ABM Nizamul Haque Tuesday. The court set Feb 23 as the next date of hearing.  The court was also set to issue an order over a petition to scrap bail of six accused in the case but deferred the date.On Jan 19 the six accused threatened two students of the university, Nazmul Hossain and Rajibul Islam, organizers of a protest body demanding speedy trial of the murder case. Later Nazmul Hossain filed a general diary to Kotwali Police Station following the threat.
The court issued a show cause notice on Feb 6 wanting to know why bail of the six accused should not be scrapped.
Those who are on bail are Ashiqul Islam Ashique, Khan Mohammed Rois and Zahidul Islam (Zoologyy), Istiaque Mehbub Arup and Rashedul Islam Razu (Philosophy) and Mahbub Akram (Government and Politics).
The hearing on the plea to scrap the bail was held on Feb 13 and the court was set to issue an order on Tuesday. Ten out of 37 witnesses have so far testified in the case.
Zubair, a 37th batch student at the Department of English and an activist of Chhatra League, was brutally killed by rivals on Jan 8, 2012. His death had sparked off a wave of protests by students and teachers of the residential university.
Then Registrar Hamidur Rahman filed the case with the Ashulia police. The Investigation Officer (IO) filed a charge sheet on Apr 8 last year against 13 students of the university’s 37th batch.
The court of Dhaka District and Sessions Judge Abdul Majid took cognizance of the charges on May 12 last year.
Those accused are Shafiul Alam Setu and Abhinandan Kundu Ofi (Statistics), Ashiqul Islam Ashique, Khan Mohammed Riza and Zahid Hassan (Zoology), Kamruzzaman Sohag, Istiaque Mehbub Arup and Rashedul Islam Razu (Philosophy), Mahbub Akram (Political Science), Mahmudul Hasan and Mazahrul Islam (History), Nazmus Shakib Tapu (Microbiology) and Nazmul Hassan Plaban (Public Administration). – Court Correspondent
