Ensuring voting rights of disabled stressed

Speakers at a views-sharing meeting here have stressed for ensuring socio-political and voting rights of the persons with disabilities for ensuring their overall development and equal human rights.
Without mainstreaming the persons with disabilities with the national development activities at all levels through ensuring their all human rights as per the concerned UN Convention, sustainable national uplifts could not be attained, they said.Rangdhanu Zilla Protibandhi Adhikar Sangstha (RZPAS) organised the meeting on ‘Representation of Disabled People and Voting Rights’ under the Social and Political Rights of Disabled People Project at Raja Ram Mohan Club auditorium in the city on Sunday.Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Shahidul Islam attended and addressed the meeting as the chief guest with President of RZPAS Nur Alam in the chair.President of District Legal Aid Committee for Disabled People Advocate M A Basher Tipu, Human Rights facilitator of Add International at its Rangpur Office Mahfuzar Rahman, President of Rangpur Protibandhi Foundation Akbar Hossain, President of Raja Ram Mohan Club Monwar Hossain, Assistant Director of the Social Service Department Mosaddekur Rahman, Assistant Director of the Youth Development Department Rowshanul Islam, Professor Maloy Kishore Bhattacharya, addressed as special guests.Government and NGO officials, public representatives, civil society members, disabled people, community leaders, journalists, disabled people and elite attended the meeting, moderated by Capacity Development Facilitator of ADD International Marufa Begum.The speakers said sustainable national uplift is not possible without mainstreaming and turning the people with disabilities into able and worthy human resources through ensuring their equal socio-political
and human rights in the society.Terming the people with disabilities as the integral part of the society, the speakers said the disabled people could do the same as the able if adequate opportunities were provided to enjoy the basic human rights like others.They stressed for taking steps so that the disabled people had their proportionate representations in the local government bodies as well as in the parliament so that their rights were established everywhere in the society like the able people. -BSS, Rangpur
