A total of 245 voting centres in five upazilas of the district have been identified vulnerable as all things are set for holding of the second phase upazila election tomorrow (Thursday).
Sources at the local Election Commission office said there are 9,65, 950 voters in the five upazilas–Chandpur Sadar, Haimchar, Matlab North, Matlab South and Faridganj–while a total of 55 candidates are vying for different posts in the polls.Polling will be held in 397 centres, including 2616 booths.
Of them, about 245 centres were identified as risky as per records of the Special Branch (SB) of police.The numbers of the risky stations are: 54 in Matlab South, 52 in Matlab North, 59 in Chandpur Sadar, 58 in Faridganj and 22 in Haimchar.Chandpur SB official Mizanur Rahman(DIO-One) said special security measures have been taken at the risky voting centres to ensure peaceful holding of the elections.Chandpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Amir Jafar echoed Mazinur’s speech, saying that police and Coast Guard members would be deployed in the char (land mass emerged from river) areas to maintain law and order.He added armed forces have already been deployed in the upazilas to ensure a congenial atmosphere for voting.Meanwhile, District Returning Officer M Nurullah Nuri, additional deputy commissioner (General), said election materials, including ballot papers and ballot boxes, would be sent to the voting centers by Wednesday afternoon. -UNB
