The Election Commission will sit in a meeting with the heads of law enforcing agencies on Thursday to finalise security measures for the Tangail-8 by-elections slated for March 29.
The meeting will be held at the commission secretariat with Election Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mobarak, now performing the Chief Election Commissioner’s duties, in the chair.
There are five candidates — Anupam Shahjahan of the ruling Awami League, Sadek Siddiqui of JP (Manju) and independent candidates Abdul Malek (AL rebel), Principal Abu Sayeed (AL rebel) and Liaqat Ali – in the election race.The Tangail-8 seat (Basail-Sakhipur) fell vacant following the death of AL MP Shawkat Momen Shajahan, father of Anupam Shahjahan, on January 20.
The EC has already worked out the security plan for the Tangail by-elections.
Alongside police and Ansar members, 16 mobile teams of Rab members will be deployed in 15 union parishads and one municipality, while four platoons of BGB men will work as a striking force from March 27 to 30, according to the draft proposal.
Besides, four executive and two judicial magistrates will be deployed in the constituency to conduct summary trials for dealing with any possible election violence and violation of the election code of conduct. – UNB
