Restoring campus stability is priority: New JU VC

Prof Farzana Islam, the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University, said on Wednesday she will focus on resolving the crisis that has afflicted the campus for months.
“My first job will be to restore stability on the campus and its reputation”, Prof Farzana, also the country’s first-ever female Vice-Chancellor of a public university said.
She took over the office on March 2 about three months after embattled VC of the university Prof. Anwar Hossain resigned in January bowing to nine months of teachers’ protests.“Stability will return to the campus if I work in close cooperation with the teachers and respect their opinions”, she said.
Asked about her priority she said she has already told the teachers to take quick steps to end the session jam.
On student politics she said she will not allow destructive and terrorist activities on the campus.
“Teachers’ politics will not affect administrative activities of the university if I work in consultations with the teachers”, she added.
Asked about long-delayed Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) election and registered graduates election, she said “JUCSU election is important, but we need little more time.”
The process to hold the registered graduates election has already started, she said. “Coexistence of student politics and smooth environment of education is essential for holding the JUCSU election and I hope steps could be taken soon after discussion with student leaders,” she said.
Replying to another question she said there is no doubt that the 42-year-old university lags behind in research. She cited fund shortage for lack of research work.
Asked how she feels to become the country’s first-ever female VC of a public university she said “I have taken the challenging responsibility as a human being in the most critical moment of the university’s history.”
Regarding development of country’s womenfolk she said women in Bangladesh work in all fields with responsibility and they have been successful.
Saying women have also been facing difficulties in moving forward she said,” I think women deserve more facilities for their development”. – UNB
