BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah on Friday alleged that personal attacks and character assassination are going on in the present Parliament.
“Parliament is a place to discuss different national issues and problems but personal attacks and character assassination are going on in it. No conscious people expect this from Parliament,” he said while addressing a meeting at the National Press Club.
The BNP leader made this comment a day after the prime minister and ruling party lawmakers lambasted Khaleda and Tarique Rahman in Parliament for their comments on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman terming him as “first illegal prime minister” of the country.
Mahmudur Rahman Mukti Sangram Parishad organized the meeting demanding the release of Amardesh editor Mahmudur Rahman and withdrawal of ban on publication of the daily.
Barrister Rafiqul criticized the remarks of the ruling party lawmakers against Khaleda, Tarique Rahman and Ziaur Rahman and apprehended that severe statements may come against their progenitor in future.
He said there should be an opposition in Parliament and they would criticize the government. “But now the opposition have joined the government becoming cabinet ministers in an unprecedented manner,” he added.
The BNP leader said the present Parliament was not constituted in accordance with the Article 65 but in line with the rules of Election Commission (EC).
Parliament has no rights to assassinate character of any person. Since the Parliament has been formed without any inclusive election, which is unprecedented in the globe, he added.
He alleged the people have lost their confidence on the judiciary.
Rezaul Kabir Sikder, president of the organisation, and journalist Ruhul Amin Gazi, among others, also addressed the meeting.
Meanwhile, addressing a protest meeting at the National Press Club, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said there is no alternative to launch movement to get relief from the present situation.
“There is no jail in the country without a BNP detainee and there is no court where there is no false case against BNP leaders and activists. This situation cannot be allowed to continue,” he said while addressing the meeting demanding the release of Secchasebok Dal president Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel.
The BNP leader called for launching movement to establish a democratic government in the country.
Dhaka city (North) unit of Secchasebok Dal organized the meeting.
