JP no more a one-man show: Ershad

Jatiya Party chief HM Ershad, who had unilaterally taken important party decisions in the past, has stressed running the organisation with everyone’s help.
The party currently sits on the opposition in Parliament. Ershad said the Jatiya Party was now more organised.
“The party will be run with everyone’s help in future,” he said before a joint meeting of the party’s presidium members and MPs began in Dhaka on Sunday. The former military dictator had been criticised for his often contradictory remarks in the past.
Ershad’s party contested the Jan 5 national polls, although he had declared a poll boycott. It emerged as the main opposition with the BNP and its allies staying away from the polls. His wife, Raushon Ershad, is the current Leader of the Opposition.
There have been reports of a conflict between Ershad and Raushon. However, both have sought to scotch the speculation.
Ershad said he had 74 cases against him and lamented, “I have never been able to practice politics freely.”
Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu, the recently appointed party secretary general, dubbed the former president “sign of party’s development and struggle”.
“He worked for the welfare of Bangladesh when he was in power,” Bablu said.
“None of his contemporary politicians had been in jail for such a long period as he (Ershad),” said the secretary general.
Party’s presidium members Anisul Islam Mahmud, Moshiur Rahman Ranga, Tajul Islam chowdhury, Golam Habib Dulu, Salma Islam, among others, were present.
Some of them had sided with Raushon over taking part in the national polls, which Ershad intended to boycott.
However, Ershad’s younger brother and party presidium member GM Kader and the party’s former secretary general Ruhul Amin Howlader were absent.-bdnews24.com
