Cop among 35 injured in Sunamganj BNP clash

At least 35 people, including a policeman, were injured in a clash between two groups of BNP in Dakhhin Sunamganj sadar upazila on Wednesday afternoon.The clash took place between the supporters of the upazila unit BNP leader Ansar Uddin, who was deprived of position in the recently declared committee, and the supporters of Faruk Ahmed, convener of Dakhhin sadar upazila unit BNP. Witnesses said Ansar Uddin along with his men brought out a procession at Pagla Bazar and blocked the Sunamganj-Sylhet highway by torching tyres and placing logs. At that time, supporters of the Faruk group came to the spot where the two groups locked in an altercation, which later turned into a clash. Men on both sides, equipped with locally-made weapons, swooped on each other leaving 34 people injured. The unruly BNP activists vandalised and torched some shops during the melee. On information, police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control lobbing 50 rounds of teargas canister and firing rubber bullets while a policeman also received injury. Police detained three people from the spot. Additional policemen have been deployed in the area to prevent fend off further trouble.
