Police on Saturday arrested two activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) in connection with a crude bomb attack on the vehicle of former Sylhet City Corporation mayor and city Awami League president Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran at Pathantula here on Friday afternoon.
The arrestees were identified as Akmal Khan and Abdul Mamin. Akhter Hossain, officer-in-charge of Jalalabad Police Station, confirmed the arrests.
Benu Chandra Deb, sub-inspector of the police station, filed a case in this connection on Friday night.A crude bomb was hurled targeting the vehicle of the former SCC mayor at Pathantula here on Friday afternoon.
However, he escaped the attack unhurt as the bomb missed his vehicle narrowly and exploded on the street.
Kamran said several youths in a group threw the bomb at his vehicle at Pathantula Point on his way to Ambarkhana after attending a marriage ceremony at a community centre.
The OC said JCD activists brought out a procession at Pathantula demanding the withdrawal of the cases filed against senior BNP leaders. “The crude bomb was blasted from the JCD rally,” the OC said.
Friday was the fouding anniversary of JCD, the student affiliate of the main opposition BNP. Members of JCD celebrated the day by organising different programmes.
Kamran Chowdhury, former mayor of Sylhet, was defeated by BNP’s candidate Ariful Haque Chowhury in the last Sylhet mayoral election. Ariful Haque is now behind in jail as he has recently been implicated in the Shah AMS Kibria murder case in a supplimentary FIR submitted one decade after his death in a bomb attack in Habiganj in 2004.esk
In Ariful Haque’s absence Kamran may take the unofficial leadership of Sylhet City Corporation, informed sources have said.
