The United Kingdom on Thursday called on both the government and all parties to exercise restraint and respect the rule of law, and come together to break this cycle of violence and disruption.
British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Robert W Gibson returned to Dhaka today from a short break in the UK and made the statement.
He expressed his sadness to learn about the continuing loss of lives, and injuries as well as the detrimental effect on children’s education and the economy caused by the ongoing violence across the country.
Gibson called on all parties to refrain from inciting or committing acts of violence and intimidation.
The High Commissioner said: “I’m deeply saddened that within the last month, over 50 people have been killed and many hundreds more horribly injured in acts of violence across Bangladesh. Many children have had their education badly affected: the economic cost grows daily.”
He said this is having a detrimental effect on the development and stability of the country. “I hope that all sides will refrain from inciting or committing future acts of violence and intimidation. The tragic death of so many in Comilla on Tuesday is the latest example of how innocent people are paying the ultimate price for the ongoing situation.”
Gibson extended his condolences to the families of all those who have been affected. – UNB
