Abbas freed, Fakhrul bailed in one case, held back in another

Senior BNP leader Mirza Abbas has been released from prison after getting bail from the High Court in four cases.
He had been in jail since Mar 16 in connection with cases accusing him of sabotage.
Dhaka central jail’s superintendent Mahbub Ali said that the BNP leader was released after they had received the court documents.He stepped out of the jail just after 8pm. Hundreds of the party’s supporters were seen greeting him with flowers at the prison gate.
The Dhaka District and Sessions Judge’s court had sent Abbas, BNP spokesperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and the party’s metropolitan unit leader Abdus Salam to jail on Mar 16 after rejecting their bail pleas.
Abbas secured a six-month bail in the four cases from the High Court.
On Jan 20, Fakhrul, Abbas and Salam got an eight-week bail in three cases from the High Court but the order was overturned by an Appellate Division bench on Mar 9.

A court on Thursday granted bail to BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a murder case filed with Shahbagh police station but denied his bail plea in another murder case filed with Ramna police station.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate M Zahurul Haque passed the order after a hearing on the plea for Fakhrul’s bail. Advocate Sanaullah Mian and Advocate Zainul Abedin Mezbah submitted the bail petition on behalf of the BNP leader.
Earlier on March 27, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rezaul Karim sent Mirza Fakhrul to jail rejecting his bail plea.
On November 30 last year, a case was filed against 50-60 unidentified persons with Ramna police station in connection with the killing of one Habibur Rahman in a petrol-bomb attack on a bus on the VIP road at Malibagh.
On November 28 last year, another case was filed against 50-60 unidentified persons with Shahbagh police station in connection with the killing of a pedestrian as a bus crashed on the road island in front of the Shishu Park following a petrol bomb attack on the bus.
Although Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s name was not included in the FIR of both the cases, his name was mentioned as an instigator to the incidents.
On Mar 16, Fakhrul was sent to jail after he surrendered to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court. – UNB
