The Anti-Corruption Commission will investigate allegations of embezzlement against human rights group, Odhikar.
The group is already under pressure for coming up with a list of ‘casualties’ during the government’s eviction drive at Shapla Chattar on May 6.
The commission got some complaints against the right body in mid-July, ACC Deputy Director Md Harun Ur Rashid told journalists on Thursday. He said the matter was being investigated.
“We are looking through the documents we have received from the NGO Bureau, and the records we seized from Odhikar.”
Police arrested Odhikar’s secretary Adilur Rahman for releasing manipulated information on the eviction drive at Motijheel’s Shapla Chattar.
Numerous documents were siezed from its office following court’s permission.
When asked about who has made the embezzlement allegation against Odhikar, Rashid refused to answer citing legal constraints.
The charge accuses Odhikar of misappropriating the funds it received from various foreign organisations.
The ACC director said, “We received the allegation in the middle of July. It said the rights body showed false expenditures to siphon off millions of taka it received through money laundering.”
