Mentioning the government’s strict position about rape incidents, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Wednesday said that action will be taken against offenders after proper investigation into rape cases.
He said this while interacting with reporters at the secretariat. “We’ve decided in the last Cabinet meeting that we’re going to take a tough stance on violence against women,” said the minister.
An ordinance has been issued making the death penalty as the highest punishment for violence against women. The decision of revising the maximum penalty has come at the behest of the Prime Minister, said Asaduzzaman.
The minister said he hoped death penalty will deter rapists. Asked whether cases of violence against women do not end quickly for lengthy process of judiciary, the minister said that the trial process is not under the Home Ministry.
“Our judiciary is independent. I’m doing what I need to do to ensure justice. I’m keeping an eye on all matters including police investigation,” he said.
However, the government will take action if there is any allegation about investigation, said the minister. “We’ve created PBI and CID to enhance the efficiency of police … The Prime Minister has promised to ensure good governance so that people get proper justice.”
When asked about Sylhet custodial death, he said that investigation is underway. There will be a proper investigation after taking cognisance of his wife’s case, said Asaduzzaman.
“The accused have to face trial. The PBI is investigating the incident. They will identify the culprits through proper investigation,” he added.
Rayhan Ahmed, 34, a resident of Akharia in Sylhet city, was beaten to death in police custody on Sunday, his family said.
His wife Tahmina Akter Tanni filed a case at Kotwali Police Station early Monday accusing a number of unidentified people.
