A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed five accused, including slain photojournalist Aftab Ahmed’s driver Humayun Kabir Molla on a five-day
remand each in the case filed about his murder.
Magistrate Mizanur Rahman of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka passed the order after hearing.
Other four accused persons are Belal Hossain Kislu, Shabuj Khan, Raju Munshi and Habib Hawlader.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained them from Dhaka’s Agargaon and Gazipur during raids on Sunday night.
Veteran photographer Aftab Ahmed’s body was recovered from his Dhaka residence on Dec 25 last year.
Aftab’s driver Humayun had been missing since the killing. RAB claimed that the detainees admitted to killing the 78-year-old photojournalist because they wanted to rob.
Aftab Ahemd, recipient of the ‘Ekushey Padak’ in 2006, had worked with the Daily Ittefaq for a long time.
He had authored several books including ‘Shadhinota Sangrame Bangali’ (Bangalees struggle for freedom), ‘Banglar Muktir Sangram-Sirajuddoula
Theke Shekh Mujib’ (Bangalees struggle for liberation – from Sirajuddoula to Sheikh Mujib), ‘Amra Tomader Vulbona’ (We will not forget you).
His camera captured some of the most poignant images of Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War and of Bangabandhu Sheikh Majibur Rahman. – Court Correspondent
