Akbar Ali for reducing govt term to four years

Stressing the importance of amending the constitution to bring a change in the country’s political culture, former caretaker government adviser Dr Akabar Ali Khan on Saturday said government’s term should be reduced to 3-4 years from the existing 5-year one. “The government’s term should be three to four years instead of five years, and the constitution needs to be amended in the current perspective of the country’s politics,” he told a discussion. Movement for People’s Law and Constitution organised the discussion, ‘Bangladesh Constitution Review’, at Dhaka University’s RC Majumder auditorium. Akbar Ali emphasised forging a consensus for changing constitution as there is no everlasting constitution in the world. “It can be changed considering the country’s present situation,” he said. Turning to political violence, the former bureaucrat said there will be no end to the problem until the caretaker government issue is resolved. About good governance, he said the local government system must be strengthened to achieve that goal. Columnist Mizanur Rahaman, Barrister Sadia Arman and Professor of ASA University Jamilur Rahman, among others, spoke at the discussion held with Dr Harun or Rashid of Philosophy Department in the chair. – UNB
People’s court finds Sayedee innocent, says son
Newly elected upazila chairman and war crimes convicted Maulana Delwar Hossain Sayedee’s son Masood Sayedee on Saturday said what ever judgment given by the trial court Maulana Sayedee was found innocent in the peoples’ court.
His comment came after he met his father at Kashimpur prison in Gazipur on Saturday.
Masood Sayedee, who has been elected chairman of Zianagar upazila in Pirojpur in March 23rd polls, claimed his father innocent quoting the government ministers and ruling party lawmakers that his victory was possible because the election was held in a free and fair manner. Thus, he said, if they were correct, the victory of his son proved that Sayedee was innocent.
He said, Sayedee had advised him not to betray the trust of people of Zianagar upazila and discharge his duties properly. Quoting Sayedee, his son further said, his father conveyed thanks and expressed gratitude to the people of the upazila to give reply to injustice and repression through ballots.
Masood said his father was both physical and mentally well.
This is his first meeting with Maulana Sayedee after he has been elected upazila chairman of Zianagar.
