Dhaka, July 31 – The ruling Awami League (AL) kept its victory in two cities-Rajshahi and Barishal city corporations polls at a low key without any victory celebrations. However, party leaders and activists and people from different sections of life greeted the unofficially elected mayors AHM Khairuzzaman Liton of Rajshahi and and Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah of Barishal by offering them bouquets.
Te newly elected mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) AHM Khairuzzaman Liton expressed satisfaction over the elections and scarified his joy to the city people.
Claiming the RCC elections to be the most successful of the three city polls held on July 30, Liton said the election was held in a free and fair manner with no report of irregularities or vote rigging.
The Awami League backed newly Mayor Liton came up with the remarks at press held at his house at the Upasahar residential area on Tuesday.
Asked about the allegations made by BNP candidates over irregularities in the three polls, Liton said it is their usual habit, and claimed that the allegations were not correct.
He also said it was not clear to him why his opponent, BNP mayoral candidate Bulbul, boycott the election.
Ltion further said to the journalist that after getting the charge of the mayor, he would like to work along with everyone. However; removing garbage clean the city will his first work, Liton added.
Earlier, thousand of leaders and activists of AL and its wings organizations, various government, non-government and social organizations came to greet Liton for his victory.
People from different sphere of life including the party leaders and activists greeted their newly elected mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah by offering bouquets.
In Sylhet, the BNP mayoral candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury is leading in Sylhet with 90,496 votes while AL’s Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran has received 86,870 votes in 132 centres out of total 134. The BNP candidate is leading by 3,626 votes, while the total number of voters in the two withheld centres is 4,787.
The elections to Rajshahi, Barisal, and Sylhet city corporations were held on Monday. – Staff Reporter
