AL govt unable to give a welfare-oriented budget: BNP

Dhaka, June 5 – The BNP yesterday said that the present government won’t be able to give a welfare-oriented budget for the people.
“Nobody can expect a welfare oriented budget from the anti-people government. There is no reason to expect a pro-people and welfare oriented budget from the present government,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. Speaking at a press briefing, he however said that the party would give its formal reaction after placement of the budget in Parliament.
The BNP leader’s comments came two days ahead of Finance Minister AMA Muhith is going to place the national budget for 2018-2019 in parliament on Thursday.
He criticized the premier for her statement that country is going ahead and it’s democracy has now stood on solid ground and its economic base has also become stronger. He termed the statement merely a farce and claimed that the country is going towards darkness.
BNP vice chairman Ahmed Azam Khan, Shawkat Mahmud and Abul KHair Bhuiyan, among others, were present at the briefing.
Meanwhile, speaking at a discussion meeting, BNP vice chairman Major (Retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed declared that the BNP and 20-party alliance won’t take part in the election keeping party chairperson Khaleda Zia in jail.
He also said the BNP also won’t participate in the election under the present government and unless an election time neutral government is not formed.
“We have taken to the streets and we will take to the streets strongly to restore the democracy of the country. We are waiting as to good sense is prevailed in the minds f the government,” he said.
He said BNP is not a weak party rather it has 80 per cent support of the people.
Labour Party, an ally of the BNP-led 20-party alliance organized the meeting with its president Dr Mostafizur Rahman Iran in the chair. – Staff Reporter
