Dhaka – The ruling Awami League is heading towards absolute majority bagging 40 seats out of 147 in Sunday’s parliamentary elections that was marked by violent clashes in different parts of the country amid boycott by the opposition alliance.In the remaining constituencies, Jatiya Party (Ershad) so far won six while JSD two and Worker’s Party one constituency. Four rebel and independent candidates came out winners in the election.
The unofficial winners include AL President Sheikh Hasina, Matia Chowdhury, Kamal Ahmed Majumdar, Arif Khan Joy, Mostafizur Rahman, Shamsul Haque Chowdhury, JP Chairman HM Ershad, JP Presidium member Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu and Haji Mohammad Selim. Earlier, 153 MP candidates elected unopposed in the much-talked-about 10th parliamentary elections.
Of the 153 seats, 127 candidates of AL while 20 of Jatiya Party (Ershad), three of Jasad, two of Workers’ Party and single candidate of Jatiya Party (Manju) are waiting for the official declaration from the Election Commission.
Meanwhile, the BNP-led 18-party alliance that boycotted the election demanded immediate cancellation of the polls results. At least 19 people were killed at different parts of the country during the election-related violence.- UNB
