AL leaders ask the BNP-led alliance to drop Jan 5 rallies

The Awami League-led 14-party alliance has told the BNP to drop plans of hitting the streets on Jan 5.
After a meeting on Saturday at the Awami League’s central office, Food Minister Qamrul Islam asked the BNP not to be violent on the streets.
BNP has said its supporters will march with black flags and hold rallies across the country on Jan 5 marking the day as ‘Killing of Democracy Day’. The last general election was held on that day in 2013 which the BNP and many other parties boycotted.Tension is rising after the Awami League announced to celebrate the day as ‘Victory of Democracy and Constitution Day’.
Awami League Dhaka city unit General Secretary and Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya said the leaders and activists of the 14-party alliance would hold rallies at 16 points in Dhaka.
The detailed schedule will be decided today or tomorrow following discussions, he said.
Awami League Publicity Secretary Hassan Mahmud urged the leaders and party supporters to resist violence by BNP on Jan 5.
He was speaking at a discussion of Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote at Dhaka Reporters Unity on Saturday.
He alleged that BNP was still conspiring to create trouble and anarchy
“But people of Bangladesh will not give them a chance.”
Hassan Mahmud said BNP supporters were losing confidence on Khaleda for her ‘wrong leadership’.
“Khaleda Zia has said a group wants to marginalise her. She has done that herself by boycotting the Jan 5 polls,” he said. – bdnews24.com
