AL to observe Hasina’s Homecoming Day Tuesday

Awami League will observe its President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ‘Homecoming Day’ on Tuesday in a befitting manner.

On May 17 in 1981, Sheikh Hasina returned home from India after nearly six years in exile following the assassination of the country’s founding president Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members by a group of disgruntled army officers on August 15, 1975. Dhaka, UNB News Agency Reported.

However, both the daughters of Bangabandhu-Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana-survived as they were in Germany at that time.

Hasina was elected president of Bangladesh Awami League in her absence in the party’s national council held on February 14-16 in 1981.

Awami League will organise a discussion at Bangabandhu International Conference Center at 3.00 pm marking Sheikh Hasina’s Homecoming Day.

AL presidium member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim will preside over the programme.

In a statement on Tuesday, AL general secretary and Public Administration Minister Syed Ashraful Islam requested all, including Awami League, its associate bodies and likeminded organizations, to celebrate the day across the country through various programmes like doa, milad mahfil, victory processions and discussions.
