Aman rice procurement drive of 2013-2014 season began in the district on Friday amid much enthusiasm to the millers.
A simple ceremony organized by Department of Food was held on the premises of local supply depot (LSD) at Mahimaganj under Gobindaganj upazila with district controller of food M Saiful Alam in the chair.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) M Zahurul Islam Rhohel addressed the function as the chief guest while UNO M Ashrafuzzaman, deputy director of department of agriculture extension Mir Abdur Razzak and general secretary of AL, district unit, Abu Bakar Siddique were present as the special guests.
The DC urged the food officials concerned to conduct Aman rice procurement drive as per government guidelines.
He also sought cooperation of all to make the procurement drive a success in the district during the current season.
Later, he formally inaugurated the procurement drive at the godown of LSD through cutting a red tape and purchasing rice from the millers of the upazila.
Officer in charge of LSD Hemanta Kumar Barman, local miller Abu Raihan Chowdhury, and political leaders, and the journalists of print and electronic media were present on the occasion.
Talking to the BSS DC food M Alam said as many as 5,764 tonnes of rice would be procured from 687 millers through 11 purchasing centers of the district this season.
The purchasing price of per kg of rice from the millers was also fixed at Taka 30, he also said. -BSS, Gaibandha
