Amend Constitution to curtail PM’s power: Kh Mahbub

Bar Council vice chairman Khandker Mahbub Hossain on Sunday demanded an amendment to the constitution to curtail the executive power of the Prime Minister ahead of the next national election.  “The only solution to the existing crisis will be to amend the constitution for curbing the executive power of the Prime Minister during the election period,” he told a press conference at Bar Council auditorium.

Only verbal commitment to remain neutral during the election is not enough, said Mahbub Hossain adding, “Hope, the Prime Minister will give nod to the public demand and take immediate steps to ensure that the parliamentary polls are held under a non-party, neutral government.”

He also accused the Prime Minister of spreading confusion among people by claiming that she got the permission of the President to run the ‘election-time government’.

“There’s no provision of ‘election-time government’ in the constitution. Despite that, the Prime Minister stated in her speech in parliament that she got the nod of the President to run the election-time government. It’s just a political spectacle to confuse people,” he said.

“People have no trust in this ‘election-time government’, which, in fact, is a one-party government formed by the current government to perpetuate its rule,” he added.   Bar Council members Golam Mostafa khan and Tajul Islam were present at the press briefing. – UNB
