Sunmaganj – Nearly 50 tonnes of fish have died so far in several haors (water bodies) of the district as the oxygen level in the water fell due to formation of ammonia gas, said the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. UNB news agency reported
The water quality in the haors is not normal as ammonia gas has formed there due to rotten green paddy amid flashflood that killed huge fish, ducks, said Fisheries and Livestock Joint Secretary Syed Mehdi Hasan while talking to reporters at the Circuit House here on Friday night.
Mehedi Hasan came up with the information after a team of Fisheries and Livestock Ministry visited Matian, Shanir, Karchar and Tanguar haors in Tahirpur upazila on Friday and examined the causes of death of the huge fish there.
He said the situation will return to normalcy if rain continues for the next few days.
The ministry has allowed lime spraying in the haors to protect fish, he said.
Huge dead fish were found floating in the haors of the district over the last several days after flashfloods hit the region.
Meanwhile, a team of Botany Department of Dhaka University arrived here on Saturday morning to examine the causes behind the death of the haor fish.
Besides, several teams of Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, Mymensingh, Bangladesh Fisheries and River Research Institute, Chandpur have been working to know what caused the fish to die.
