Police have recovered the body of a local BNP student wing leader, siX days after being picked up. He was an accused in alleged attack on the motorcade of Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor.
Nilphamari Chhatra Dal leader Atikul Islam Atik, 29, was found dead by the side of Rangpur-Dinajpur highway at Syedpur’s Narhiyadanga area around 7am on Monday.Nilphamari Police Station’s Inspector Babul Akter said Atik was one of the suspects in the attack on local MP and minister Noor and in the murder of local Awami League leader Khorshed Alam Chowdhury.
Atik’s sister-in-law Rehana Parvin identified the body from pictures provided by journalists. She told the local media that police had ‘picked up’ Atik from one Babul Khan’s home in Tangail on Jan 14.
Syedpur Police Station’s Inspector Firoze Kabir, however, said that none of Atik’s relatives came to claim the body until 12pm.
Nilphamar Chhatra Dal unit’s convener Morshed Azam said that Atik was the organisation’s Joint General Secretary of the Tupamari Union unit.
Earlier, another suspect in the Noor-attack case has also been found dead. On Saturday, body of local BNP leader Golam Rabbani was found by the side of Nilphamari-Domar Road at Palashbarhi area.
Rabbani was the prime suspect in the alleged attack on Noor’s motorcade.
Jamaat-e-Islami supporters went on rampage at the Nilphamari’s Ramganj on Dec 13 after its leader and war crimes convict Abdul Quader Molla was hanged.
Local MP Noor, now the Cultural Affairs Minister, went to the area the following day. His motorcade came under attack by BNP-Jamaat activists when he was returning.
In the ensuing clash between local Awami League and BNP-Jamaat supporters, five people including four ruling party supporters and a pedestrian were killed.
A case was filed the same day naming Rabbani as the principal accused and more than 1,000 others as responsible for the attack on Noor’s motorcade. abbani was absconding since the clash.
Inspector Akter of Nilphamari police said that 46 suspects have been so far arrested in the case.-bdnews24.com
