Anti-militant operation at Borohat ‘militant den’ begins

Dhaka, Mar 31 – Sounds of gunshots were heard as the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) launched an operation at the suspected militant den at Borohat in Sadar upazila of Moulvibazar on Friday.Police said members of CTTC unit and SWAT started the drive codenamed ‘Operation Maximus’ around 9:53 am, said Shah Jalal, superintendent of Moulvibazar police.
Briefing newsmen CTTC unit chief who is also DMP additional commissioner Monirul Islam said,” Operation Maximus is a difficult one as there are several rooms in the building and huge explosives lying scattered. We suspected that an explosive expert of the militant group is staying in the building. However, we couldn’t yet ascertain the number of militants in the house.”
Sound of explosion was heard in the morning, he said. The law enforcers have kept the den cordoned off since early Wednesday.
The local administration has banned public gathering in Borohat area from 9 am Friday to avoid any kind of casualties.
Police made the announcement using a loudspeaker in the morning and the order will remain in force until further notice, said a member of CTTC unit, wishing anonymity.
On Thursday, the law enforcers found the limbs of seven bodies, scattered at Nasirpur den in Moulvibazar Sadar upazila during the operation ‘Hitback’, carried out by CTTC unit.
Police suspected that all of them were killed in suicide blasts on Wednesday. – UNB
