Terming the police raid on BNP office a violent and undemocratic attitude, former president and Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh president AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury on Tuesday said the government should apologise for the incident.In a statement, B Chowdhury said, “Monday’s raid on the BNP office and arrest of its leaders and activists by breaking open its doors are unacceptable and worrisome. The government should apologise for the incident for the sake of the country’s present and future democracy.”
“Such un-political attitude in any democratic country is naturally anti-democratic and contrary to political etiquette,” he added.
Several crude bombs were exploded near BNP’s Nayapaltan central office on Monday while a rally of the 18-party opposition alliance was about to conclude.
Following the blasts, police raided the BNP office and arrested over 200 leaders and activists of BNP, including, its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, vice chairmen Sadeque Hossain Khoka, Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abedin Farroque, BNP joint secretaries general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Amanullah Aman.
Describing the police action as manifestation of the government’s anti-democratic attitude, the former BNP leader said, “I consider it as an ill-attempt to destroy democracy. It’s now clear like daylight the country’s democracy is no longer safe in the hands of this regime.”
He demanded the release of all opposition leaders and activists arrested from the BNP office and urged the government to take action against the policemen responsible for the incident.
Mentioning that the country’s people can easily understand Awami League leaders’ efforts to cover up the incident, the former president said the government should think that such aggressive and violent attitude of police is quite enough to hasten the government’s fall. UNB
