Asean lawmaker Sundari wants Myanmar to end Rohingya crisis

Dhaka, Aug 29 – Asean Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) Board Member Eva Kusuma Sundari has said global pressure on Myanmar to respond is growing and Asean must be a central part of that.Sundari, also an Indonesian MP, said this is an opportunity for Asean, as a regional bloc, to take a collective stand to convince the Myanmar government to take those difficult but necessary measures essential to end this crisis, including holding to account those responsible for these most heinous of crimes.
she made the observation while making comments relating to the statement by Malaysian Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah on the report of the independent international fact-finding mission on Myanmar.
“Malaysia’s consistent and strong stance on the Rohingya issue, urging the Myanmar government to take measures to resolve the crisis is commendable and important,” the leader said.
Malaysia’s recognition of the limitations of Asesan’s non-interference principle when it comes to allegations of genocide and crimes against humanity is a welcome breath of fresh air and should encourage other Asean member states to follow suit, Sundari said.
