‘Ashraf Bahini’ chief killed in Satkhira encounter

One Ashraf alias Ranga has been killed in an ‘encounter’ with police at Satkhira’s Shyamnagar Upazila. Police says, he was the leader of local bandit group ‘Ashraf Bahini’
Three policemen were injured during pre-dawn shootout on Sunday at Pakhimara, on the fringes of the Sundarbans, said Shyamnagar Police Station OC Chogir Miah.Ashraf has been a terror in the Sundarbans for some time, the OC has been quoted to have said.
He was sentenced to eleven years in prison by a court for a robbery, but had twenty cases like those for bank robbery and abduction pending against him.
“A police patrol went to Pakhimara on a tip-off that some bandits were gathering there,” he said. “The bandits started shooting at the approaching patrol and the police fired back.”
The OC said they recovered Ashraf’s dead body after the bandits fled from the spot of the encounter.
They also found a weapon, some ammunition, hand bombs and machetes.
SI Ashraful Islam, constables Milon Dorji and Salimullah sustained injuries and have been admitted to the Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex, police said. – bdnews24.com
